Among the vast world of vintage timepieces, there is no doubt that vintage dive watches hold a special place in the hearts of many collectors — ourselves included. With their simple, clean designs and reliable, robust movements, the tool watches of the 1960s and 1970s were built to accompany the adventurer across the globe and to keep time at its greatest heights as well as its darkest depths.
Given the popularity of the tool watch style, there are hundreds of interesting vintage variants available on the market from dozens of companies. Though many of these companies all ceased production due to the ravages of the Quartz Crisis, their watches remain — all with a story to tell and a unique take on a tried-and-true theme. Among these, vintage dive watches are some of the most attractive — even when relegated to desk duty, there\'s just something so right about a vintage example on your wrist.
Nivada (or Nivada Grenchen) should be a familiar name to vintage watch collectors. Their sporty diver\'s chronograph, the Chronomaster (or sometimes the Chronoking) Aviator Sea Diver, has been gaining well-deserved traction on the vintage circuit. But in the 1960s the brand was also a trailblazer in the realm of dive watches, producing numerous handsome examples. Some, such as the Depthmaster, even featured a groundbreaking 1,000-m depth rating!
This particular example, a Fiber Star, features an incredible cushion case produced from blue fiberglass combined with a rotating black dive bezel with white printing. Flanked by a large winding crown and set beneath an acrylic crystal, the dial is executed in a beautiful silver color and features a black chapter ring with luminous hour indices, a luminous \'baton\' handset, and a date window at 3 o\'clock.
Powered by a 25-jewel Swiss-made automatic movement and paired to a blue calfskin strap, this funky piece of 1970s design is in excellent condition, patiently awaiting the wrist of its new owner.
