A very primitive, rustic antique “hedge chair,” dating to the late 18th century. Constructed as an armchair from mixed local timbers, this piece embodies the resourceful craftsmanship of rural makers who worked with what was at hand. Its robust, uncompromising form and hard wooden seat reflect both necessity and tradition, offering a rare survival of vernacular furniture from the Georgian period.
The chair’s irregular joinery and weathered patina speak to centuries of use. At the same time, its authenticity and raw honesty make it a striking addition for collectors of country furniture, primitive antiques, or those seeking a statement piece with genuine historical resonance.
This hedge chair is not merely functional — it is a tangible link to the rhythms of rural life in 18th‑century Britain, where furniture was as much about endurance as comfort.
Provenance: Rural France, late 18th century.
Condition: Please refer to the images. Solid construction. Surface wear is commensurate with age.
Size: H 73 cm x W 45 cm x D 44 cm x Seat Height 23 cm (17 3/4\" x 28 3/4\" x 17 1/3\" x 9\")
Primitive chairs of this type are increasingly scarce. Their survival offers insight into the ingenuity of rural craftsmen and the lived experience of ordinary households. This hedge chair would sit comfortably in a collection of oak & country furniture, or as a focal point in a decorative interior with an appreciation for authenticity.
