HOT ! Ornate Carved Elm Armchair

Zhejiang, circa 1860

This ornately decorated armchair is from Zheijang province, produced around the mid nineteenth century from elm wood and originally one of a pair. It features some wonderfully detailed carvings on the backrest, apron and spandrels, all picked out in darker colours that contrast with the paler, golden finish of the seat, arms and legs.

The main carving on the backrest is in deep relief, showing two figures - possibly farm workers. A bat is set above this panel as a symbol for good luck. The apron and spandrels are openly carved in floral and scrolling patterns, tapering down towards the feet.

The chair is in an unusal designs, with the arms protruding over the front posts but with the head rest flush with the rear side posts in a mix of more common styles. Its lovely, intricate carvings would make it a real statement piece set in the corner of a hallway or bedroom.
