Named after the city’s Buffalo Bayou, the Houston Buffaloes joined the South Texas League in 1903 and went on to become one of the first and most successful farm teams in professional baseball through their long affiliation with the St. Louis Cardinals. Their rosters featured rising stars such as Dizzy Dean, Solly Hemus, and Enos Slaughter, who would go on to shape major league history. The Buffs’ evolution into the Colt .45’s in 1961 laid the groundwork for the Houston Astros that followed.
