Detailed information on Early Iroquois Beaded Bag

Early 20th Century

Hand Crafted from Hide Leather and Glass Seed Beads with Green Velvet Lining

In Very Good Condition

Early Iroquois (Haudenosaunee) beaded bags are exquisite examples of Native American artistry, particularly from the Haudenosaunee Confederacy (including nations like the Seneca, Mohawk, and others in what is now upstate New York and surrounding areas).

These small purses or pouches, often made from cloth (like velvet or wool) with intricate glass beadwork, emerged prominently in the early 19th century. They evolved from earlier hide bags decorated with quillwork, adapting to European-introduced materials like seed beads. The earliest documented example dates to around 1794, with production and styles developing significantly from the late 1700s through the 1800s.
